Cream & Khaki!!!!!!

What colour combination do you love chicks…….

Well at the moment, we utterly adore cream and khaki together. Now khaki has never really been at the top of my favourite colour list, but, it’s such a flattering colour and looks good on everyone.

I am also pretty smitten with these trousers from Topshop, they are high-waisted, which I thought would be a no! no!. How wrong could I be, they look great, and are so comfy and I feel pretty flattering too.

So maybe next time you are out shopping, maybe try something khaki and let us know what you think!!

We absolutely love stripes!

I am not sure what it is about stripes, but I can’t get enough of them!

For me they are the simplest way to instantly look chic, is it the navy and white combo, not sure. But whatever it is, I guarantee if you give these stripy babes a try you will love!

Try wearing a stripy-tee or knit with navy or white jeans for casual glam or wear under a black or navy suit for office cool!

I recently read an article in The Daily Mail, that said ” a Dr Peter Thompson, a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of York, announced last year that horizontal stripes actually make you look thinner”. Well blown me down with a feather, for years we have been told not to wear horizontal stripes as they do the female figure no favours and that vertical stripes are the way to go. So now chicks, we can wear our stripes however the fancy takes us!!

How do you wear your stripes? We would love to hear from you.

Fashion in your 40s and beyond……….

We want to start by saying how tricky we found the heading of this blog. Everything we came up with had negative connotations attached (e.g. fashion and the over 40s – we’re not over it!), which is exactly what we’re battling against.

top by Anthropoligie

top by Anthropoligie

Anyway, let’s forget headings on concentrate on one of our most favourite topics…FASHION!!!We love, love, LOVE…… fashion, and even the word is fab!!! Unfortunately, we’re bombarded with tales by “the experts” who confuse us about what we should and shouldn’t wear when we reach a certain age! Here we go again, “a certain age”.Here at HC-HQ, we’re not fashion experts but ladies just like you who love to look good. And in our book, look good = feel good and feel good = looking good. Win, win! We’re certainly not going to tell you what you should and shouldn’t be wearing, but instead talk about what we like to wear, how we dress, and the tips that we find work for us. And if you have any tips about what you wear that you’d like to share, we’d love to hear them.

We use the following rule, if we feel good in something then our “inside sunshine”, (as we like to call it), will shine for all to see. That’s it, the only rule…If you like a tight fitted dress and feel fabulous in it, then rock it, if you love a short skirt, ditto, just make sure you are feeeeeeeeeling 100% good in whatever you wear.

For us, we love clothes that fit us well. This is really important, because something that doesn’t fit well will always make us look bigger than we are, and that’s not what any of us really want or need. As discussed in previous blogs, we’re big fans of accessorising, and find this a really good way to keep up with trends – if the ‘it’ colour of the season is jade green (top tip, hot chicks – it’s going to be huge), then pick shoes, a bag, a necklace or a ring and, BOOM, you’re on trend.

Accessorising is what we usually do to update our existing clothes, giving an old outfit a fresh feel. It’s not about splurging every season on a whole new wardrobe, just adding a few bits and pieces to what you already have.

If you’re looking for inspiration on how to update your outfit, look at what other women you admire are doing and copy! We have huge style-crushes on the following gorgeous ladies:

o    Julianne Moore

o    Cameron Diaz

o    Naomi Watts

o    Gwyneth Paltrow.

We love the way they look, and it doesn’t matter that we don’t have their celebrity budgets (although a girl can dream!). We can all wear a fab pair of jeans and white tee with a pair of brightly coloured wedges and bingo – Cameron Diaz! There’s nothing wrong with looking to see how other women dress and picking what you love to try for yourself. Copying’s the highest form of flattery, right!

The high street is now full of fabulous shops that are copying styles not just from the runway, but also from celebrities. Our favourite high street shops are: Zara, (always on trend) Marks and Spencer, (the Limited range is fab), Next (great for classic bits), and H&M, (an Aladdin’s cave of treasures, but you do need to look).

Sales are another great way of picking up a classic item at a reduced price, so do keep an eye on Whistles – they have an amazing sale and you can get brilliant bargains: we I got a lovely cashmere jumper for £35. Cashmere is a great investment item because it’ll last you for years.

On the subject of saving a bit of cash here and there, here are our top 10 style tips so you look great without spending a fortune every season:

o     Add an item of costume jewellery. This’ll bring any outfit to life without trying too hard, and you can pick the colour/theme of the ‘season’ to make your look right up to date. Easy peasy.

o    New season shoes or boots update any item in your wardrobe. Pick one of the season’s styles, be it a wedge or sexy heel, to give your wardrobe a modern feel without trying too hard.

o    Always spend some extra cash on a well-fitted pair of jeans. It really makes all the difference. Jeans are a failsafe item for us: they go with EVERYTHING…Sling on a good pair of jeans, a fitted shirt, a necklace, boots or heels and a bag and off you go…….

o    Buy a suit jacket… dresses up any outfit: jeans, (yes, we love jeans) a dress, a skirt – anything works with a nice suit jacket. If you feel daring, go for a bold colour!

o    Block colours are not only very slimming on those days when you might not be feeling it; they also look very chic indeed

o    Don’t neglect your hair. A good haircut and colour is essential to looking good. No one wants to see our roots.

o    Tee shirts, we love, love, love, them, they are so versatile… dress them up or down, perfect. Add jewellery – instant glamour

o    Why not try a bright coloured handbag… I know we shouldn’t but, hey a chick just has to have another bag. You don’t need to spend a fortune, the high street is full of this season’s bag, be bright and bold!

o    Don’t forget about your nails, please. If you’re colour-shy with clothes, try painting your nails a bright colour. We promise it’ll make a difference to any outfit without much cost at all. No excuse not to give it a whirl.

o    Most importantly, wear what makes you feel good, happy and confident… that will radiate on the outside and, if you feel good, you will look good. Work it chicks!

We hope you enjoy!

It’s all about the statement necklace

necklace5You’ve probably picked up by now on the fact that fashion is one of our biggest passions

We just love how clothes can make us feel and look. We’re definitely not slaves to fashion, but we do like to have some fun with it. One of our favourite ways to add a bit of va-va-voom to an outfit is by adding a statement necklace. In fact, we love accessories full stop. Adding a fabulous piece of jewellery – whether it be a ring, a necklace, a bracelet or a great pair of earrings – can really complete a look.

Here are a few of our favourite ways to wear a statement necklace:

  • Wear it over a boyish t-shirt and jeans, add some ballet pumps or heels and you’re good to go
  • Wear it with an all black outfit – it breaks up the black, and gives a look that’s slick, stylish and modern
  • If you’re colour-shy, add a colourful necklace to add a bit of vibrancy to your outfit. Don’t be afraid to be bold, clashing colours can look great: if you’re wearing blue, why not add a bright orange necklace.

This photo is of one of my favourite statement pieces and I always get asked where it’s from: H&M, £12.99. It goes with everything and injects a bit of glamour, transforming every outfit. The high street is full of shops selling great value costume jewellery; a few of our favourites are Zara, H&M and Top Shop.

Nail it

nailsHere at HC-HQ, we love making a fashion statement by adding a wash of bold colour to our nails

There’s nothing nicer than having a set of well-manicured nails. Plus it’s a cheap and fun way to experiment with colour.

Colourful nails always make a statement, and the colour possibilities are endless – from pretty pastels to bold brights and neon hues.

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not try some nail art? We love mixing up the French mani by replacing the traditional white tip with hot hot pink. The end result is a modern and edgy take on an elegant classic.

With summer looming, why not go tropical with a variety of bright summer hues that will compliment any outfit and add a pop?
